While
there is always a need to bring fresh, contemporary language to our
efforts to
communicate Christian Science to modern audiences, there
is a precision to the
vocabulary Mrs. Eddy originally chose for teaching
Christian Science that should be
thoroughly understood as a firm foundation. It may be useful to occasionally take an in-depth
look at the vocabulary
we use. For instance, just what do Christian Scientists mean
when they
use such words as “error,” “mortal mind,” “animal magnetism,”
or “matter”?
Christian Science Terminology is
a new reference book that shines a spotlight on over
400 terms or
phrases found in Science and Health, along with their definitions
or commentary
written by Mary Baker Eddy. It might be thought
of as a "mini-Concordance." However, unlike the Complete Concordance
to Science and Health, which lists almost all the words in the textbook,
Christian Science Terminology contains only nouns and Biblical names. It uses a format which
highlights sentences or phrases which offer
specific explanations of special terms. These
definitions are
not just cited, but are included in the book. This unique format allows
you to quickly
focus on the term being defined, making this book a
great time-saver for those who like to do
research of specific words. An index to the defined terms and phrases is included.
Due to
limited space, or lack of a specific definition in the textbook, not
all nouns, names, or
terms used in Science and Health are included,
nor are all definitions or explanations of a
given term presented. Some words, such as the synonyms for God, may have several pages
devoted
to them due to the vast amount of unique descriptions available; other
terms may have
only one definition or description. However,
all the main terms used frequently in the textbook
are included, plus
some unusual or less familiar terms or phrases that had intriguing
definitions.
Also, the book does not include the better known
definitions found in the "Glossary" of Science
and Health, although
the reader will be referred to them. Christian Science Terminology
provides
a quick way to discover less familiar definitions found throughout
the entire textbook.
For those who simply like to browse, or
who plan to study this book from cover to cover, you will
find some
interesting discoveries ahead. Seeing the definitions presented as
they are, may
yield a deeper understanding of each term, as well as
providing a way to compare and contrast
the way Mrs. Eddy uses similar
terms. You may also run across words or phrases you may
never
have thought to look up before, but are glad you found!
